Making maximum of your lithium-ion battery

Battery research off late has now been focusing of lithium design chemistries. The quantum of research is so high that one can safely assume that all future portable devices would be run by lithium ion batteries in future. The lithium-ion combination is superior to the nickel and lead based chemistries. Due to the increased emphasis the applications for such batteries have also increased.

Although this combination of lithium-ion has not fully matured, continuous improvements by ways of different metal and chemical combination permutations is being carried out. I very recently got myself an IBM Lenovo R61 ThinkPad. It has a lithium-ion combination laptop battery. However the discharge is quite fast against my expectations. It is found that short discharges with subsequent recharges do not help in providing the required calibration necessary to synchronize the fuel gauge with the battery’s state of charge. However a conscious deliberate discharge of the laptop battery for every 30 recharges does help to correct the problem. The speed of ageing of such batteries is a function of state of the charge and the operating temperature.
